While the New South Wales south coast will not join the A-League in 2011, the region still has the potential to field youth and women's teams on the national stage.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) awarded a 12th licence to a western Sydney consortium yesterday, causing the south coast to miss out.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said Canberra would be an obvious choice for a 13th licence if the league expands again.

The chairman of the South Coast Football Club, Eddie De Gabrielle, says the group had insufficient funding compared to other bids.

But he says FFA is particularly interested in fielding a National Women's League and a National Youth League team, opening up opportunities for the south coast.

"It creates the pathway for all women and youth in this whole region to play at the national platform level," he said.

"That's what everyone aspires to, everyone wants to play at the national level."
