The South Coast is a region that can lay claim to being one of the most productive nurseries for football talent in Australia, with many local juniors having gone on to perform at the highest level, including the Hyundai A-League, and a number of competitive competitions abroad.

From early representatives such as Charlie Tolhurst in 1903, to 2006 World Cup stars Scott Chipperfield, Mile Sterjovski and Luke Wilkshire, a number of locals junior have also gone on to proudly represent the region playing for their country.

Current stars from the South Coast region

Scott Chipperfield Scott Chipperfield

Scott was born on December 30th, 1975, and came up through the ranks, playing for local sides Bellambi Rosellas, Tarrawanna, Fernhill and Wollongong United before going on to play for the Wollongong Wolves in the National Soccer League (NSL) in 1996. He was an integral part of the Championship winning sides of 2000 and 2001, earning the Johnny Warren medal both seasons as the most outstanding player in the Australian domestic season.

After the 2001 season, Scott joined Swiss club Basel, where he has gone on to win silverware every season, including the Swiss Cup in 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008, the Swiss Super League in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2008, and the Uhren Cup in 2003 and 2006. He also holds dual Australian and Swiss citizenship.

Scott has also been a part of the Socceroos squad since his debut against Fiji in September 1998, notching up more than 50 appearances for the national team. He was a part of the team that successfully defeated Uruguay in a playoff in November 2005 to reach the 2006 World Cup Finals.

Scott is well known for his loyalty and proved this with his unexpected appearance at the 2002 Oceania Nations Cup in New Zealand, a tournament which was marred by the financial turmoil of the then Soccer Australia. The non-existent financial contribution meant that the Australian players had to pay their own way to get to New Zealand. Chipperfield became the only one of Australia's large European contingent to answer the call and perform for his country in their time of need.

Scott's family is still based on the South Coast and he remains one of our most successful exports at both club and international level.
